one of the three regional rail train stations in center city, suburban is full of food shops, buskers, book shops, and lots of napping people on benches.

live djs and laser shows on the dance floor are big parts of the draw to pulse, philly's "premier" nightclub. open until three in the morning, there's plenty of time to enjoy the entertainment and lounge style rooms. twenty-one to enter, say the bouncers.

city hall stands as a beautifully built emblem of the city. its bright yellow clockfaces can be seen for miles up broad street. skateboarders and college students hang out around here all the time, trying to catch a glimpse of willy penn peeing on the city when the sun hits him just right!

not actually a park at all, love park features the iconic love statue! skateboarders thrive here in the summer, but everyone from locals to tourists come by to enjoy the large fountain. diagonal from city hall, there's always a lot of foot traffic coming through here!

the well-worn eleven acres of the courtyard blossom only in the summer. mini baseball diamonds are well-worn into the grounds, lingering reminders of the prisoners who once lived within the towering walls. during the day, sections of the grounds are separated by locked fences.

because of the design of the prison, the central tower is able to see everything in the cells and courtyard. it's a great place for watching over any troublesome weres!

originally set up for death row inmates to make their peace, eastern state's chapel also offered movies, concerts, and the gymnasium. though the stand-alone building is in a state of disrepair, the open space is still available to guests!

one of the later second story cellblocks, seven has catwalks set back near the wall to open up the space and allow more light to flood in, adding to the cathedral-like atmosphere. stubborn plants growing through the chipping paint and concrete add to the vibe of penitence and decay.

another spoke on the architectural wheel with a second story to handle the overflow of prisoners, cellblock five has plenty of room for anyone needing to get out the exploring bug.

one of the original blocks in the prison, block two only has one floor. the residents of this block had small exercise yards in which they could pace and stretch their limbs.

built as something straight out of a gothic novel, these imposing walls invoke images of castle turrets, reminding anyone passing through the heavy metal gates that there is no escape. a pair of fierce gargoyles perch on the sides of the gate and greet prisoners.

not actually a part of the prison, mugshots is just across the street. tour guides sing praise for its refreshing hot chocolate, and locals devote themselves to the cannoli and sandwiches named after famous criminals--especially those who had stints within eastern state. it draws in customers with friendly, warm service, and a mixture of fresh, organic and available vegan foods.

outside of center city, but still within the urban limits, many locals consider south street to be a pretty big tourist trap. that doesn't stop their bar crawls on weekends, or shopping trips in the summer. its abundance of sex shops and tattoo parlors draw in an alternative crowd.
