THE CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE
IS SHOWING OFF ITS DARK UNDERBELLY.
IS SHOWING OFF ITS DARK UNDERBELLY.
philadelphia, pennsylvania has a rich history of over three hundred and twenty years. millions of people have lived in its borders, improving one of the most influential cities in the country. why, then, is it always shadowed by its neighbors, new york and boston? academics gloss over the history after the declaration of independence has all of its signatures; only a scant handful of television programs and movies mention the city, while film crews flock to the surrounding areas. the official story of philadelphia isn't told, but neither is the secret narrative that only the natives know.
the city has secrets it refuses to let out. werewolves, ghosts, dragons, and psychics dwell just beneath the surface, hiding in plain sight. to protect its own, the people in charge, the ones who have manipulated their way to the top and protected their territory viciously, have created systems to keep its supernatural residents safe and in control. for years, these systems have been accepted unquestioningly by supes, and with few exceptions, it has worked. the citizens and the supes have coexisted peacefully.
brewing beneath the surface of the underbelly, however, is a growing sect of resistors. they believe that they should not have to hide their abilities, or their status. they resent being forced into hiding and the expectation that they will quietly deny defining parts of their personhood. the system, they say, is no longer necessary for protection against witch hunts, or being exorcised, or even against a second-class standing. with popular fiction and narratives saturated with subjects like themselves, their emergence into reality cannot come with the dire consequences like in the old days. many think the supes still following the system are cowards, refusing to respect and often times picking fights with the underground followers.
the in-fighting is predicted to put a further strain on the system, and the tightly knit web will begin to develop holes for supes to slip through. the followers of the system are slowly beginning to fear how the resistors will affect their lives in the big picture. stepping up to put both sides down are the neutralizers, a group of citizens who have been introduced to the world of supes through personal experience, and who wish to have them eliminated from the city.
when you take to the streets, will you be follower or resistor? or will you maybe just become a neutralizer and destroy the problem altogether? the streets are waiting.
