PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM SHINE ON ME
SHINE A LIGHT WON’T YOU SHINE A LIGHT.
CHARLIE-CHERIE BOWDEN | TWENTY-ONE | WEREWOLF | RESISTOR | MILA KUNIS
PLEASE STATE YOUR NAME AND AGE FOR THE RECORD.
My name is Charlie-Cherie Bowden, but my friends call me Chi-Chi. I am twenty-one years old. Will I be this old forever, or will I continue to age normally?
WHAT BRINGS YOU TO PHILADELPHIA? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HERE? DO YOU LIKE IT?
My family, which consists of two sisters and a brother in addition to a mother since my parents had recently divorced, moved here when I was eight years old. Before this we lived in California and Delaware. I’ve never lived in the same place for more than two years, except for where I live now. And I’m about to move again, go figure. North Philadelphia seems to be my focal point though, so at least I will know my way around.
SO YOU HAD A GOOD EXPERIENCE HERE?
A couple, I guess. The birth of my niece in Temple University Hospital has been the highlight of my life so far, I think. We lived in a shelter when we first came to Philadelphia, so I feel like my experience was doomed from the start. After we left the Ilter we moved to an apartment on Girard Avenue. I was nine by then, and then we moved to a place in Somerset on Hart Lane. We stayed in the Kensington area from 2001 to around 2005. That’s when my dad came back into the picture. Apparently he had left his wife and made his way back to Philadelphia to escape hurricane Ivan. He and my mother got back together for a short time, but that didn’t work out (surprise, surprise) and they split up less than six months later. We moved out of Kensington in 2006, to Darien Street. We lived there until 2008, when my mom moved us out of our own home because I wanted to shack up with her douche of a boyfriend. They’re still together, sort of, but I think it’s safe to say that relationship will be officially over once we move out.
I graduated from Girls High in 2008, went to Thompson Institute in 2009, and I’m currently enrolled in Prism Career Institute. I’m working on a degree in early childhood education. I don’t…exactly…know how that’s going to work out considering the life I lead, but working with children is all I know. What the hell else am I supposed to do?
well, did you? give a more fleId out history, including the good and the bad—include information from early life to current, with as much detail as you think is necessary. do try to be fairly thorough, please!
MANY PEOPLE SAY THEY FEAR THE CITY. WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?
I…am afraid of the dark. God, so many terrible things happen in the dark! I’m scared of hurting someone I love. I think most of us are. And centipedes. Those little bastards are disgusting!
WHAT ABOUT YOUR DREAMS? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
I want to be free. Does that make any sense? What was done to me cannot be undone, but I don’t want it to define my life. I want to make my own choices. I don’t want to constantly lie to everyone around me for fear of The System finding out and something else happening to me. I mean, I don’t want a war or anything like some of the radicals I’ve heard about. Again, I just want to be free.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF FAIRY TALE CREATURES—WEREWOLVES, GHOSTS, DRAGONS, PSYCHICS—THINGS LIKE THAT?
If I wasn’t one of these…entities…I wouldn’t believe in them. I didn’t, not before I was attacked in 2010. I was a little skeptical of the dark before, but that “incident” has scarred me for life. In more ways than one. Anyway, in searching for help I discovered an entirely different world. Werewolves, psychics, ghosts. Dragons! Never in a million years could I have ever guessed that any of them…us…are real. Not to mention wrongfully oppressed. Nothing could have ever control the characters I’ve read about in any book, but they always say the truth is stranger than fiction.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF?
If someone were to assign me one of the seven deadly sins, mine would be pride. I rarely ask for help, but will accept it if I have no other options. Though I know that I am not always right, I will certainly never openly admit to being wrong. I am so easily annoyed my first language seems to be sarcasm. However, the positive far outweighs the negative. I can entertain myself with such simple things as ketchup packets or loose change, which is why a career in early childhood education would be perfect for me. I used to be extremely reckless and impulsive. I can’t afford to be that way anymore. Now I think about every move I make, from what I do to the words the pass my lips. I am very intelligent, almost nerdy. I love languages, know some Spanish, Japanese, and not to mention French. The only language besides English and sarcasm that I speak fluently however is the seemingly dead language known as Pig Latin. I am admittedly a video game junkie with a preference for roleplaying games, though I don’t have much time to indulge anymore. I bond quickly and am fiercely loyal.
THAT’S ABOUT EVERYTHING. IF YOU’LL JUST PLEASE FILL OUT THIS IET, WE’LL BE ON OUR WAY.
I was attacked by a werewolf when I was nineteen. I was on my way home from a friend’s house and decided to take a shortcut through the woods. That was the dumbest thing I have ever done… I don’t want to talk about this anymore. Can I go now?

leighlah stood in way too long cafe line for the second time in one week. the white hot chocolate from this place was quickly becoming an addiction. it usually didn't take this long to get up to the counter, but for the second time this week the place was filled to bursting. what the hell? was everyone in seattle developing a liquified white chocolate addiction? there had better be some left for her when she got up there, damn it. leighlah sighed and shuffled her feet, impatience making her restless. she only exercised that virtue in the classroom. anywhere else and she was grossly lacking in that department.
she pulled her phone out of her pocket and checked the time, groaning once she confirmed that she'd been standing in this line for almost five minutes. she was used to coming and going, in more ways than one. ha! leighlah smiled at her secret joke and unlocked her phone. she might as well entertain herself while she waited. she had, like, six people to reply to in words with friends anyway. those poor bastards. didn't they know she was a word game champion?!
now that she was having fun her turn at the counter came all too quickly. someone tapped on her shoulder and she jumped, turning her head to look at the woman as she nodded for her to move forward. leighlah smiled apologetically and moved forward. she normally struck up a conversation with the barista, but it was too busy for that today. she placed her order and slipped the money over the counter, putting both her phone and the change she received back in the pocket of her coat. leighlah crossed her arms over her chest as she waited, chewing on her bottom lip just to be doing something. she stared down at her gray suede boots, bouncing up on the tips of her toes and then rocking back on her boots. god, this was boring!
she opened her mouth to sigh once again, but the server turned around and placed her order on the counter. leighlah thanked her and moved out of the way so that the next person could so. she put her gloves back on to protect her hands from both the winter chill outside and the heat of the cup. "finally." she murmured to herself as she picked up the cup and turned to leave the store. only, instead of walking away, she collided with a solid figure that had been standing right behind her.

you enter a dimly lit room where a shadowed figure sits across from you with a thick file in hand. The figure’s face is indistinguishable. a hot cup of coffee made just the way you like is waiting on the table. the figure beckons for you to sit. you do. finally the figure across from you speaks.
